The 2nd of July 2016 will forever remain one of the heartwarming moments on the hearts of inmates of the Senior Correctional Centre of the Ghana Prisons Service in Accra.

In what was dubbed the 'Compassion Project ' student leaders and volunteers from far and near joined the youngsters in harmony to engage in several  activities. Paramount among them was the donation of items including provisions and other food items, clothes and books  to the unit.

This was preceded by a health screening exercise, outdoor and indoor games, a focused group counseling and a get-together, packed with fun.

The event which saw the participation of about 70 beneficiaries was inspired by the challenges that confront the service.

The Senior Correctional Centre is the only institution in the country that caters for young offenders and juveniles. The centre takes care of them by training them in various vocational trades like Welding, Vulcanizing, Tailoring, Carpentry, Draftsmanship, Auto electrical and mechanical and General Electricals. They are also given tuition in the classroom on ICT and Moral education.

Speaking at the event, Executive Director of NSAGhana,  Prince David Orchill expressed his satisfaction at the level of impact the Borstal Home is making in the life of the juveniles. "As people with the wellbeing of the nation at heart, it behooves on us to put a smile on the face of others. It is our pleasure to extend a helping hand to our folks here", he said.

"We are witnesses to the good work done here by the authorities to put the inmates in good shape", he added.
The leadership of the unit expressed their gratitude for the compassion showed them.

The compassion project is an initiative of NSAGhana, a youth and students group that doubles as organiser of the annual National Students' Awards.

VALENTINE'S DAY PRESS STATEMENT ( 14TH FEBRUARY, 2016)

NATIONAL STUDENTS' AWARDS

WISHES ALL GHANA STUDENTS A HAPPY VALENTINE
..........................................................

Fellow Students,

We bring you warm love from the NSA Ghana. As students, it is always very prudent to notice that we are  endowed with ONE certain principle that keeps us in motion and united. Sometimes, we find it so hard to control such a principle simply because the majority of people have misconstrued its  meaning. What is it?? The word is "LOVE".

It is this WORD that Jesus Christ preached about 2016 years ago when he came to save humanity. It is this same WORD that He talked about when He was advising the ISIS the other time. Sampson died of the same word, and through it kings have led and some have  fallen because of the same word.

It is not a secret to some of us that, one gentle philanthropist called HON. VALENTINO is always remembered on every 14th day of February, in every year. This man lived a virtuous life, he showed  love to everybody in his era, he respected everyone. He and the NSA Ghana are in a common agreement, hence the  introduction of the prestigeous NATIONAL STUDENTS' AWARDS (NSA) GHANA. History tells NSA GHANA  that, Valentino was a man who used to go around the world with the aim of giving a helping hand to the vulnerable ones. We have also taken upon ourselves to  award the very good men who contribute positively to the development of education in Ghana.

Today as we celebrate Valentine's Day/ Chocolate Day, we wish to admonish all students to be circumspect in the exhibition of love. Know that it is a day of love not a day of immorality. And the love shown this day is not a certificate to abuse purity of heart, body, and soul. Therefore, in your enjoyment, measure what is acceptable and exceed it not.

Let us also take advantage of the day to share with you some of the different types of love which we expect to see being showed today:

AGAPE:
This is an unconditional love that sees beyond the outer surface and accepts the recipient for whom he/she is, regardless of their flaws, shortcomings or faults. It is the type of love that everyone strives to have for their fellow human beings. Although you may not like someone, you decide to love them just as a human being. This kind of love is all about sacrifice as well as giving and expecting nothing in return. The translation of the word agape is love in the verb – form: it is the love demonstrated by your behaviour towards another person. It is a committed and chosen love.

PHILEO:
The Phileo love refers to an affectionate, warm and tender platonic love. It makes you desire friendship with someone. It is the kind of love which livens up the Agape love. Although you may have an Agape love for your enemies, you may not have a Phileo love for the same people. The translation of the word phileo is love in the noun – form: it is how you feel about someone. It is a committed and chosen love.

STORGE:
It is a kind of family and friendship love. This is the love that parents naturally feel for their children; the love that members of a family have for each other; or the love that friends feel for each other. In some cases, this friendship love may turn into a romantic relationship, and the couple in such a relationship becomes best friends. Storge love is unconditional. It accepts flaws or faults and ultimately drives you to forgive. It’s committed, sacrificial and makes you feel secure, comfortable and safe.

EROS:
Eros is a passionate and intense love that arouses romantic feelings; it is the kind that often triggers “high” feelings in a new relationship and makes you say, “I love him/her”. It is simply an emotional and sexual love. Although this romantic love is important in the beginning of a new relationship, it may not last unless it moves a notch higher because it focuses more on self instead of the other person. If the person “in love” does not feel good about their relationship anymore, they will stop loving their partner.

This just offers you a general understanding and description of the four types of love which promotes a good, healthy and progressive relationship. In any relationship. You should have all these four types of love working together to enable it survive for a longer time. But in some cases, a relationship may be long-lasting if partners share the same style of love.

Once again, NSA wishes you a happy happy Valentine's/Chocolate Day. Enjoy your day in a very positive manner to the climax. Avoid anything that will tend to cause any harm to your personality. Such things include; unnecessary fights, alcoholic drinks, premarital sex, etc.

It is the prayer of NSA Ghana that this Valentine's Day will draw you closer to Holiness than from it.

Signed;

Prince David Orchill
